JAMB Expresses Readiness To Ensure Inclusive Access To Quality Tertiary Education
The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) , Prof Is-haq Oloyede , said that the board was ready to not only facilitate access to education for all but also ensure equity as special arrangement had been made for inclusivity of Person With Disabilities (PWDs) to acquire tertiary education.
Oleyede disclosed this at the Conference of JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG) in Abuja on Monday added that parents would no longer be allowed to choose course for their children living with disabilities, seeking admissions into tertiary institutions.
Oloyede who was responding to the comment by the National President, National Association of Visually Impaired, Stanley Onyebuchi, stated , stated that PWDs would be allowed to chose the courses they want to study school themselves to enable them maximize their potential without any hindrance.
The conference has the theme:”Towards Increasing Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria”.
The event also featured the unveiling of the Strategic Roadmap for Inclusive Access to Quality Higher Education in Nigeria 2024-2028.
“The case of the student that wanted to study law, it was her step father that said he cannot her to go as far at Calabar to study law but asked that she be enrolled in Kaduna State University.
“This is because the course she showed interest in was not available at the university but the father asked that she study special education.
“We have now taken a decision that henceforth, just like with regular admissions, no parent will be allowed to have a say in the admission choice of candidates with disabilities,” he said.
Also speaking in his goodwill message, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki stated that the Commission will be ready and willing to introduce Courses and programmes that would deepen national capacity towards meeting the noble objectives of providing equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
“ Where necessary, decisions arising from the Conference requiring the review of curricula, would be given the needed attention, in line with our resolve to continually update and develop globally acceptable minimum academic standards for effective delivery of university education in Nigeria.
“We must, as Higher Education providers pay special attention to the challenges being faced by students with disabilities in our respective campuses. It is pertinent to ensure that adequate and accessible infrastructure is provided to support them, including putting in place measures to cater for their easy access to classrooms, laboratories, libraries, hostels, washrooms, dining halls and sports/recreational facilities, in addition to access to financial support for their overall wellbeing,” he said.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
