The Kaduna State House of Assembly has commenced an investigation into the administration of former Governor Nasir el-Rufai. In light of this, the Assembly has requested detailed documents regarding the administration’s expenditures and contract awards spanning from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.
The inquiry, as outlined in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Finance and referenced LEG/S.382/VOL.II/615, focuses on various aspects including loans, financial transactions, contractual liabilities, and other pertinent matters.
This move follows the recent establishment of a committee by the Kaduna Assembly to scrutinize all finances, loans, and contracts awarded during the tenure of the former governor. Henry Zacharia, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, confirmed the formation of the eight-member fact-finding committee tasked with investigating not only Governor El-Rufai but also his senior aide and investment counselor, Jimi Lawal.
The decision to launch this investigation was prompted by Governor Uba Sani’s assertion regarding the substantial debt inherited from the previous administration, which he claimed hampered the state government’s ability to meet salary obligations. Governor Sani alleged an inheritance of approximately $587 million in debt and N85 billion with 115 contract liabilities.
In a letter signed by the Clerk of the State Assembly, Sakinatu Idris, the Ministry of Finance was directed to submit comprehensive documentation pertaining to El-Rufai’s tenure. The requested documents include details on loans, approvals, accounts, contractor payments, staff salaries, and reports on various governmental initiatives.
This initiative reflects the Assembly’s commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, aiming to shed light on financial matters and ensure responsible stewardship of public resources.
