The organized labor in Lagos State has expressed appreciation for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s recent approval of an N85,000 minimum wage for state workers. This decision was hailed as a significant step forward by labor leaders in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
During a televised interview, Sanwo-Olu announced that his administration is committed to ensuring that workers receive a minimum wage of N85,000, emphasizing that his government is actively working for the benefit of the people.
Mrs. Funmi Sessi, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Lagos State, welcomed the announcement, particularly during a challenging economic period for the nation. However, she expressed the union’s expectation for a higher wage, citing the unique cost of living challenges in Lagos, including transportation, accommodation, utilities, and food expenses. Sessi noted, “We were expecting nothing less than N100,000, but at least, it is a step in the right direction.” She also called for increased infrastructure development and improved security on waterways following recent accidents.
Mr. Ishola Adejumo, Chairman of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter, also commended the governor’s decision. He highlighted the high cost of living in Lagos and stressed the need for wages that reflect this reality. “The N85,000 minimum wage is a welcome development and very much anticipated. People who work in Lagos deserve a better wage because they spend more compared to other states,” he stated.
Adejumo urged the governor to maintain support for initiatives such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) subsidy and other measures aimed at improving the welfare of Lagos workers. He concluded by congratulating Sanwo-Olu for his efforts and expressing hope for continued progress in the state.
