Eket Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State was shrouded in sorrow as the late Nollywood makeup artist, Abigail Edith Frederick, was laid to rest in her family home in Ikot Udoma. The 24-year-old artist tragically lost her life in a boating accident on the River Niger, along with five other film practitioners, including the notable actor Junior Pope.
The burial ceremony was a poignant event, filled with grief as family members and friends gathered to bid their final farewells. Governor Umo Eno, having visited the bereaved family, ordered that Frederick’s remains, initially buried by the bank of River Niger, be exhumed and returned to her hometown for a proper burial. This gesture aimed to provide closure to the family and honor the deceased in line with local customs.
In tribute to Frederick’s memory, a candlelight procession illuminated the evening as those who knew and admired her celebrated her contributions to the Nollywood industry. The funeral service, conducted by the Church of Christ, Ikot Udoma, was attended by various dignitaries, including the Eket Transition Committee Chairman, Akaniyene Tommey, Commissioner for Tourism Charles Udoh, SA on Entertainment Moses Eskor, Godfada Uko, members of the Eket Transition Committee, Nollywood actress Eve Esin, the Nollywood community, friends, and sympathizers.
During his visit to the deceased’s family, Governor Eno announced automatic employment for Frederick’s elder sister and directed the renovation of the family house. Expressing deep regret over the unfortunate incident, he highlighted Frederick’s passion and determination, reflecting the Arise Spirit of Akwa Ibom’s youth. Governor Eno assured the family of the government’s unwavering support, emphasizing the state’s commitment to standing with its people in times of need.
