Lionel Messi has been called up to the Argentina national team for their upcoming South American World Cup qualifiers, despite being on the injured list at his club, Inter Miami. Messi has struggled with fitness issues and has missed several games for his club, playing only 37 minutes since September 3.

Argentina is set to host Paraguay on October 12 and then travel to play Peru five days later in CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Messi, who captained Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, played and scored in their match against Ecuador on September 7 but asked to be substituted in the final minutes.

Little detail has been provided about Messi’s physical condition, with initial reports citing “muscle fatigue” and later references to “scars” from an old injury. Despite his club’s recent struggles in his absence, Messi’s improving condition raises hopes for his return to the pitch soon.
