Marine waste clean-up yielding results — LASWA
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Monday said there had been a slight reduction in marine waste since the launch of its waterways clean-up campaign in collaboration with private stakeholders.

Recall that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Feb. 12 launched Waterways Clean-up Campaign in a bid to enhance safety on the waterways.
The governor said that the waterways clean-up campaign was a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to safe, clean and friendly water transportation.
Assessing the impact of the campaign, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, the General Manager of LASWA, told our correspondents that the exercise and awareness campaign had reduced volume of waste on waterways.
Emmanuel said that with reduction of waste on waterways, transportation would be enhanced with lesser risks.
He urged members of the public, especially people living along the coastal lines and marketers along the water bodies, to stop pushing waste into the waterways.
Emmanuel said that after the awareness campaign, anybody caught in the act would be sanctioned.
“We are doing a lot now to clean up waterways; if some members of the public feel that they can sabotage our efforts and continue to push waste in the water bodies, we won’t tolerate such.
“If people persist in this, obviously there will be strict penalties for those who are caught in such act,” he said.
The general manager said that the authority’s research recently launched on waste would determine the sources, composition and estimate of marine litters as well as debris on the waterways.
National trail reports that the campaign is being carried out with the collaboration of some non-profit organisations including Temple Management Company, Food and Beverages Recycling Alliance (FIBRA) and ‘I love My Lagoon’, among others.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
