The Kano State Judiciary reported on Sunday that hoodlums hijacked a protest against bad governance, resulting in an invasion of the high court. The vandals damaged offices and stole exhibits from ongoing cases, including guns recovered from suspected criminals. Baba Ibrahim, the spokesperson for the Kano State High Court, confirmed the incident in a statement.
Ibrahim stated that the judiciary has launched an investigation to track down the vandals and bring them to justice. He recounted that on Thursday, rioters, identifying as #EndBadGovernment protesters, broke into the high court headquarters, vandalized offices, and stole an unspecified amount of money and guns seized from kidnappers, which were kept as exhibits in ongoing cases.
“Private and official vehicles parked on the court premises were razed, while some were vandalized by the protesters. Offices, including those of the Chief Judge and other judges, were vandalized. The protesters destroyed new and old case files, scattering everything in the buildings. Exhibits, including guns kept in the court’s store, were also looted,” Ibrahim detailed.
He added, “This is the first time the Kano State Judiciary has witnessed such an incident. Vehicles parked on the court’s premises were also vandalized and looted.”
The incident mirrors the vandalism, looting, and arson of Lagos State’s oldest high court in the Igbosere area during the 2020 #EndSARS protest.
