The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has urged National Assembly members to partner the Directorate towards provision of skills to school leavers and Artisans to become self reliance in their constituencies.

The Director General, National Directorate of employment (NDE), Dr Nasir Mohammed Ladan made the plea at the opening ceremony of the Basic Business Training (BBT) of 30 school leavers and artisans  supported by the senator representing Bauchi North, Senator Nazif Gamawa at the Teachers House, Bauchi.

The DG who was represented by the Bauchi state Coordinator of NDE, Lawan Yaya Ali, explained that the training was designed by the directorate to train school leavers and artisans on the rudimentary aspects of business management skills in order to address the menace of unemployment or underemployment by new entrants into the informal sector.

Dr. Ladan explained that the informal sector is a significant contributor to the economy of every nation as according to him, it helps in stimulating the market economy, promoting flexible labour markets, stimulating productive activities and absorbing retrenched labour from the formal sector.

“It is equally pertinent at this time to inform you that, most developed nations of the world did not achieve economic prosperity because of the large corporations that exist therein, but through the small scale businesses based in the informal sector that provide employment for the majority of their populace.

“It is for this reason that the NDE encourages the establishment of small businesses which has the potential to end up as big entities depending on the commitment of the business owners,” he stated.

Mohammed Lawan said the NDE as established in 1987 was aimed at targeting graduates, school leavers and artisans with a view to giving them training on different skills acquisition fields to tackle incidences of mass unemployment among the youths through various strategies developed over the years to make them self-reliant

“It would interest you to know that the fear of failure has been the bane of all that want to venture into new businesses, and that fear can only be overcome by knowledge. It is this knowledge that we intended to impact during the course of the lectures commencing from today”, he added.

He said the participants will be equipped with managerial skills in record keeping, cash management and other significant topics that would equip you with enough knowledge to succeed in your businesses.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Commerce, Alhaji Gazali Abubakar, who was represented by a Director,  Alhaji Sulaiman Zailani called on the participants to put into use all that they would learn to ensure prudent management of their businesses, calling on all stakeholders to support the effort of the Agency in helping the unemployed identify their potentials.

One of the participants, Malam Yusuf Yakubu Mahmood while commending the Directorate for organizing the training exercise, promised to make good use of the knowledge acquired during the training calling on governments at all levels to support the initiative as according to him, it will drastically reduce the growing number of unemployment in the country thereby cutting down the rate of societal ills associated with idleness.

Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.

According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.

Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.

Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
