The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has launched the National Sequencing Consortium, aiming to bolster public health security in Nigeria. The inauguration, held in Abuja, was led by NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris, who emphasized the transformative potential of this initiative for the country’s public health infrastructure.
Importance of Genomic Sequencing
Genomic sequencing involves reading and mapping out all the DNA in an organism. This technology helps in understanding genetic diseases, developing treatments, and improving agricultural practices. Dr. Idris highlighted the importance of genomic sequencing for rapid pathogen identification, disease surveillance, and outbreak detection, which are crucial for effective public health interventions.
“The launch of the consortium signifies President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to advancing public health and leveraging cutting-edge science for the benefit of Nigerian citizens,” Idris stated. He noted that the initiative aims to position Nigeria as a key player in global genomic research and enhance the country’s health security.
Addressing Challenges in Genomic Data Management
Dr. Idris pointed out historical challenges in genomic data sharing within Nigeria, particularly among private sectors and academia, which have resulted in data loss and missed opportunities. He stressed the need for a centralized national genomic data repository and better connectivity between disease control programs and surveillance networks.
“The national genomic sequencing consortium will coordinate and oversee surveillance strategies, fostering collaboration and resource sharing among researchers and institutions. It will standardize data collection and analysis and provide educational resources for researchers,” Idris added.
Overcoming Technical and Logistical Challenges
Prof. Christian Happi, represented by Prof. Anise Happi, discussed significant strides and challenges in genomic sequencing in Nigeria. He identified key obstacles, such as a lack of specialized skills for handling vast data, maintenance issues with sequencing instruments, and high costs and unreliable supply chains for essential materials.
“Handling the vast data generated by genomic sequencing requires specialized skills. There is a notable gap in trained professionals, leading to analysis bottlenecks and delays in outbreak responses,” Prof. Happi noted.
Potential of Genomic Sequencing
Prof. Sunday Omilabu, a virologist, highlighted the critical role of genomic sequencing during the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized its potential for uncovering disease prevention mysteries, debunking myths, and enabling real-time, cost-effective interventions by governments.
“With the ongoing emergence and spread of infectious diseases, there is a need to increase Nigeria’s sequencing capacity and build a skilled workforce in pathogen genomics and bioinformatics,” Prof. Omilabu stated.
Enhancing National Response to Infectious Diseases
Dr. Clement Maseko from the National Veterinary Research Institute in Vom, Plateau State, underscored the consortium’s vital role in strengthening Nigeria’s ability to monitor, respond to, and mitigate infectious disease threats. He emphasized that the collective expertise of consortium members would inform evidence-based policymaking related to infectious disease control and prevention.
“Collaborative initiatives will provide opportunities for capacity building and knowledge exchange among participating institutions, strengthening the genomic surveillance infrastructure and enhancing personnel expertise,” Dr. Maseko concluded.
The establishment of the National Sequencing Consortium represents a significant step towards enhancing Nigeria’s public health capabilities and positioning the country as a leader in genomic research and public health security.
