In a pivotal moment during his screening by the Senate, the newly appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Cardoso, made a resolute commitment to the Nigerian people. He firmly assured the nation that neither he nor his deputies would allow politicians to exert undue influence or hijack the operations of the CBN under their stewardship.

The question posed to Cardoso during his Senate screening revolved around the potential pressure from politicians urging him to run for elections while occupying the esteemed position of CBN Governor. In response, Cardoso articulated the gravity of the role, emphasizing that it is a position of utmost trust. He underscored his unwavering dedication to upholding the integrity and independence of the CBN.

Cardoso conveyed, “It is important that we, who are considered for this position today, understand that this is a position of trust. With that comes a huge responsibility to meet up with that trust.”

He continued, “As far as I am concerned, under my leadership, we will not be hijacked by anybody. The idea is to ensure that we do what is right, when it is right, and how it is right. We’ve seen what the effect of not doing right has been, and we do not intend for that to be repeated.”

Following a rigorous screening process, the Senate confirmed Cardoso as the 11th Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Moreover, the Senate also approved the nominations of Deputy Governors for the apex bank. Cardoso’s ascendancy to the position comes in the wake of the suspension and subsequent resignation of his predecessor, Godwin Emefiele.

As Cardoso assumes leadership at the CBN, Nigerians can expect a steadfast commitment to maintaining the institution’s integrity, ensuring its autonomy, and safeguarding the nation’s financial stability. His appointment marks a significant step forward in sustaining the CBN’s critical role in Nigeria’s economic growth and stability.
