Nigeria@61: Defence, Police officers’ wives provide succour to wounded soldiers in Kaduna

The President, Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Vickie Irabor, on Friday, provided materials to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna for the treatment and rehabilitation of wounded soldiers.
The items included 30 wheel chairs which can function electronically and manually and 4-in-1 integrated D3 defibrillator /monitor for fast resuscitation of patients with cardiac arrest.
Others were interlocking nail set for fixing of fractured bones, and consumables for rehabilitation such as gloves, cotton wool and spirit.
Irabor said the gesture was to show gratitude and support to the brave and courageous soldiers who willing put their lives on the line for the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that the donation was made in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons
(NCFRMI).
NAN also report that the event was used to flag off Project Zero Hunger at the hospital.
The association president said, “as wives and mothers of these wounded soldiers, we have come on this special day that Nigeria marks her independence.
“To let you know that injuries sustained in combat speaks to the nation of your sacrifice.
“But beyond that, they should remind you of millions of Nigerians that continue to move freely in safety because of your sacrifice.
“This has put you on the roll of heroes of our great Nation.
“We celebrate you, we thank you and also implore you to not allow these scars limit you, you are not alone as we will continue to stand by you.
“There is a bright future ahead of you so keep hope alive.”
In her remark, the Federal Commissioner, NCFRMI, Mrs Imaan Ibrahim-Sulaiman said the Zero Hunger initiative had been successfully launched in four different locations in Abuja and Nasarawa State.
According to her, over three million Nigerians have been displaced by insecurity, man-made and natural disasters within the space of one year.
“There are over 73, 000 registered refugees residing in Nigeria from over 23 countries and about 500,000 Nigerian refugees awaiting repatriation from Cameroon, Niger, Chad, Libya, Mali and other countries.”
She explained that the Zero Hunger initiative was borne out of the neccesity to streamline and enhance the distribution and availability of food and non-food items to address the immediate nutritional needs of all persons of concern using Food Care Packs.
She added that the project was designed to promote an integrated approach and enable well meaning persons to support national effort in addressing the nutritional needs for displaced persons, including
“Officers and men who, in the line of duty have been inflicted with wounds.
“This project also creates a platform for different stakeholders to collaborate and support the Commission in mobilizing additional resources to positively make an impact on lives of the vulnerable while eliminating waste, compromise and duplication of efforts that was evident in the previous distribution of food and non-food items to persons of concern.
“The country’s unprecedented humanitarian crisis and high level of insecurity has put a lot of burden on the Security and Armed Forces, in ensuring that peace and stability is maintained nationwide.
“This is why I acknowledge the efforts and sacrifice of every wounded soldier here today, together, with your families, you represent what’s best in Nigeria,” she said.
According to her, the Commission in partnership with DEPOWA will continue to render necessary support to wounded soldiers and their families across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The Commissioner appreciated the support of the Minister of Humanitarian affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to the project.
In his remark, the Acting Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Col Ndidi Onuchukwu appreciated DEPOWA for the donation and assured that it would be properly utilsed for the treatment of soldiers wounded in action.

DSS Arrests Man Who Used Own Social Media Handle To Canvass Military Coup

The Department of State Services (DSS) has trailed to Oyigbo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and arrested one Innocent Chukwuma who used his social media handle to rally the military to overthrow the current government.

Posting on his “X” handle “@TheAgroman,” Chukwuma stated that a coup was needed in Nigeria and called on the military to “suspend the Nigerian government.”

He posted, “A coup in Nigeria is needed.
Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian Government, and join the AES. That is all we need now.
“It will happen eventually. Nigerians, the military needs your support now! Only them can save this country.
“The bastard in Aso Rock has basically sold this country to the West, and they run our intelligence apparatus. Only the military can reset this country. Support them,” Chukwuma posted.

A source disclosed that the suspect is cooperating with DSS investigators.

Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Newly Appointed Service Chiefs

President Bola Tinubu has written to the Senate, requesting the confirmation of the newly appointed Service Chiefs.

The letter, addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Tuesday’s plenary in Abuja, listed the nominees for the country’s top military positions.

Those named include:

General Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff
Major-General Waheedi Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff
Rear Admiral Idi Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff
Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke – Chief of Air Staff
Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye – Chief of Defence Intelligence

In the correspondence, President Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process to enable the new military heads to assume their duties without delay.

The Senate has since referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for screening and confirmation of the nominees, scheduled to take place next week.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, has revealed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

Hon. Garba made the disclosure on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish a Legislative Security Directorate, a new body proposed to strengthen security and protect lawmakers, staff, and visitors within the National Assembly.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex, and also from protesters planning to lock up the premises,” Garba stated.

He warned that Nigeria’s seat of democracy faces growing security risks, including vehicle and motorcycle theft, vandalism, infiltration by unregistered persons, and the use of fake identity cards.

According to him, failure to address these lapses could have grave consequences.
“It is clear that if proper security measures are not implemented, legislative activities could be truncated. Without sittings, there will be no representation, oversight, annual budget, or plenary — and that will destabilize both the legislature and the nation’s democracy,” he cautioned.

Garba emphasized the need for a coordinated security framework to ensure a safe and functional parliamentary environment.
“That is why this Bill is crucial. It aims to tackle these challenges and align Nigeria’s parliamentary security system with global best practices,” he added.

The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment and Functions of the Legislative Security Directorate in the National Assembly (HB 1632)”, was considered at the House Conference Hall 028 in Abuja.

While acknowledging the importance of keeping Parliament accessible to citizens, Garba insisted that public access must not compromise security.
“The need for effective security in the National Assembly cannot be overstated. This Bill is committed to ensuring the best possible security architecture to protect legislators, staff, visitors, and property,” he said.

He further encouraged state Houses of Assembly across the country to adopt similar frameworks to strengthen legislative security nationwide.

“With these few points of mine, I wish us a peaceful and productive hearing that will mark a turning point in the National Assembly’s security system,” Garba concluded.
