In its ongoing efforts to combat the remnants of terrorists in the Northeast region, Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft, operating under Operation Hakin Kai, executed a successful air strike. The operation resulted in the elimination of about 8 terrorists and the destruction of a gun truck at Baranga Village in the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
According to a press statement by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF, the opportunity strike occurred unexpectedly as two armed terrorists on a motorcycle were tracked along an active route.
The statement explained, “After sighting the aircraft, the terrorists took cover under thick vegetation. Upon engaging the vegetation cover, a gun truck with 8 terrorists suddenly appeared, speeding off to evade the attack. Subsequently, the gun truck was engaged and destroyed, thus eliminating the terrorists.
“Remnants of terrorists in the Northeast continue to seek the cover of thick forests and vegetation to evade detection by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies.”
Meanwhile, the Defense Minister, Dr. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has commended the NAF for its contributions to ongoing joint operations. He praised the NAF’s formidable air power and its critical role in preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Dr. Badaru also acknowledged the NAF’s humanitarian support and airlift services provided to the United Nations, African Union, and other African nations. He made these remarks as the Special Guest of Honour at the graduation ceremony of Air War College (AWC) Course 9/2023 held in Makurdi, Benue State.
Represented by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, the Minister highlighted the importance of NAF’s operational art, critical thinking, and pragmatic frameworks in military decision-making processes, which would enhance proactive planning and management within the NAF.
The Governor of Benue State, Reverend Father (Dr.) Hyacinth Alia, also praised the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their efforts in restoring peace in the country. He expressed gratitude to the NAF for contributing to the peace and security of Benue State, providing a sense of safety and security to its people.
Air Marshal Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), noted that the NAF would soon induct additional platforms to enhance training, air power employment, and projection. These acquisitions include helicopters, surveillance aircraft, and attack aircraft, demonstrating the government’s commitment to equipping the NAF to meet the nation’s security challenges.
The CAS acknowledged the unwavering support of the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu’s leadership in equipment procurement and training, enabling the NAF to consistently conduct operations to address contemporary threats.
