Flying Officer David Sangokoya of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has made history by winning the prestigious International Cadet Sword of Honour from the Royal Air Force College Cranwell in the United Kingdom. He received this accolade for being the top international student and overall best performer in the Leadership and Training Course for the 2023-2024 academic year.
With this achievement, Sangokoya becomes the first African cadet to earn this honor since the college’s establishment over a century ago.
During a commendation ceremony held at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja, Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar hailed the achievement as “truly ground-breaking.” He emphasized that Sangokoya’s success highlights the exceptional talent within the Nigerian Air Force, demonstrating that its officers and cadets can compete with the best worldwide.
Abubakar stated, “This feat underscores the excellence existing within the Nigerian Air Force, proving that our officers and cadets can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world.” He praised Sangokoya for setting a new standard for his peers and future cadets and officers.
He added, “Your journey as an officer has begun with this prestigious accolade. But the true measure of your success will be seen in how you serve, lead, and contribute to the mission of the Nigerian Air Force and the defense of our great nation.”
The CAS also expressed gratitude to the UK Government for its “unwavering support in providing world-class training opportunities to our personnel.” He noted that this support has enabled NAF officers to acquire invaluable skills and knowledge, thereby strengthening both bilateral ties and the collective ability to address global security challenges.
