One year into his presidency, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu declared on Wednesday that his economic reforms would persist despite the increasing hardships faced by the nation. In his televised Democracy Day speech, Tinubu acknowledged the severe economic challenges but emphasized that reforms were long overdue.
Nigeria is currently experiencing its worst cost-of-living crisis in years, with public discontent growing over the government’s recent policy changes. These include the removal of a petrol subsidy, which had kept fuel prices low, and the devaluation of the currency, leading to an inflation rate of over 33% in April.
Tinubu defended these measures, stating they are necessary to build a more robust foundation for future growth. He stressed that the goal is to ensure everyone has access to economic opportunities and fair compensation.
“As we continue to reform the economy, I will always listen to the people,” Tinubu assured, announcing plans to implement a new minimum wage as part of his administration’s efforts to alleviate the economic burden on Nigerians.
