In the most recent FIFA rankings released on Thursday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have slipped one position further down to 39th place globally. Despite this decline, they maintain their position as the fifth-best team in Africa.
This drop follows a previous decrease of eight spots in June, which was attributed to underwhelming performances in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria’s recent matches included a 1-1 draw against South Africa and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic, impacting their accumulated points from earlier successes at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
On the African continent, Morocco continues to lead, followed by Senegal and Egypt in the top three positions. Globally, Argentina retains the top spot after securing their Copa America title, with France in second place. Spain, champions of Euro 2024, have moved up to third place, ahead of England and Brazil.
