“Obaseki Explains Why Federal Roads in Edo Can’t Be Repaired”
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s convoy was stranded at the deteriorating and flooded RCC junction on the Benin-Sapele-Warri highway, a site notorious for troubling commuters. Obaseki attributed his administration’s inability to fix the dilapidated federal roads across the state to the Federal Government’s unclear stance on state involvement in federal road maintenance.
In a widely shared video of the incident, an off-camera voice is heard calling for leaders to face the repercussions of their inaction and for viewers to share the footage.
Obaseki, during a visit to the Edo State secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, noted the paradox of Edo’s geographical advantage now becoming a disadvantage due to poor infrastructure. He described Edo, particularly Benin City, as a transport hub due to its central location and connection to multiple major federal roads.
He expressed his frustration at the Federal Government’s policy regarding state intervention on federal roads. In the past, he explained, the state could repair roads and then request a refund from the Federal Government. However, despite recent proposals allowing states to take over federal roads, he noted that no state has yet been granted this authority.
Obaseki highlighted instances where state intervention was barred due to existing federal contracts, such as the Auchi-Ibillo Road and the Benin-Sapele Road, leaving the state in a difficult situation.
He further voiced his concerns regarding the Federal Government’s treatment of Nigerians, urging them to treat citizens humanely and with fairness, regardless of their political affiliations. He lamented feeling neglected by the Federal Government in Abuja.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
