Oshiomhole Condemns N30,000 Minimum Wage as Unfair, Says His Cleaner Earns Over N60,000.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing the Edo North district, has labeled the N30,000 monthly minimum wage as a “criminal wage” in an interview with Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
The former Edo state governor disclosed that he pays his cleaner no less than N60,000 monthly. Oshiomhole emphasized, “If I have chosen to employ a cleaner instead of doing the cleaning myself, that’s the least I believe I should pay.”
Oshiomhole criticized the minimum wage, stating, “What we call minimum wage is a criminal wage. When you exchange N30,000 at N800 or N700 per dollar, how much is that in reality?
“When the minimum wage was first introduced at N125 under the government of (Shehu) Shagari, its value was about two or three times what it is many years later, even in the public service.”
He further argued that the average private-sector employee is more reliable than any federal or state government employee.
Regarding his cleaner, Oshiomhole explained, “My cleaner may not have a school leaving certificate, but she has enough knowledge to clean the house. I couldn’t bring myself to pay her less than N60,000 – actually, exactly N60,000. It’s a matter of conscience. I’m considering her housing costs and the fact that she has four children.”
Oshiomhole suggested that the N30,000 minimum wage isn’t sufficient for a comfortable living standard, but rather just the bare minimum needed for survival.
“If I do this for my cleaner, I should do a bit more for my driver because he requires some level of training, even retraining, and my security is in his hands,” he concluded.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
