Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming Local Government autonomy. The ruling, delivered on July 11, declared it unconstitutional for state governors to withhold funds meant for Local Government administrations and prohibited the dissolution of democratically elected Local Government councils.
In a statement following their meeting at the Enugu State Government House, the PDP governors affirmed their commitment to the constitutional provisions supporting Local Government autonomy. Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the Forum, emphasized the importance of implementing the court’s decision carefully to avoid creating distrust between federal and sub-national governments.
Additionally, the governors discussed the demands from labour unions for an increase in the minimum wage, acknowledging the economic challenges facing the country. They expressed support for labour’s request while urging for practical negotiations that consider the financial capabilities of all levels of government.
The issue of the minimum wage has been contentious, with labour unions proposing N494,000 amid inflationary pressures, while the federal government’s offer of N60,000 was rejected. Negotiations are ongoing to find a sustainable agreement amidst concerns over economic stability and social order.
