The Rivers State Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in its efforts to apprehend criminal elements, particularly notorious cult leader David Gift Opara, widely known as 2Baba. The long-awaited success has sparked celebrations in both Ahoada East and Ahoada West local government areas of Rivers State.
2Baba, who was responsible for the heinous killing of Superintendent of Police SP Bako Angbashim, the Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada Division on September 8th, 2023, has been a fugitive until now.
In a press briefing at the Police headquarters in Moscow Road Port Harcourt, Commissioner of Police CP Olatunji Disu announced the recovery of 2Baba’s corpse. It was located and exhumed from a shallow grave in the Ebrass forest at Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.
CP Disu expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Airforce, Inspector General of Police IGP Egbetokun, the Intelligence Response Team Abuja, and tactical teams in Rivers State for their invaluable assistance in the operation.
He commended the aerial support provided by the Airforce, which significantly aided in softening the ground for the operation. The Governor of Rivers State was also acknowledged for his unwavering support throughout the manhunt for 2Baba.
CP Disu emphasized the importance of continued public cooperation and urged residents to provide information to help dismantle other criminal networks associated with 2Baba.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ahoada East, Ben Eke, praised the police and the Inspector General of Police for their achievement. He expressed relief at the end of the four-month pursuit of 2Baba, noting that business activities could now thrive in the area.
2Baba’s reign of terror, which included the brutal murder of former DPO Ahoada Division, SP Bako Angbashim, has come to an end. CP Disu extended appreciation to all who contributed to the operation, emphasizing the dedication and resilience of the officers involved.
He reiterated the commitment of the Rivers State Police Command to ensuring the safety and security of the state. CP Disu urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
In a disturbing development, it was revealed that 2Baba had been making threats and extorting money from individuals in the area until his demise. One of his victims, a prominent businesswoman, faced threats of kidnapping or death if she failed to comply with his demands.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of 2Baba’s reign of terror, the police continue to urge vigilance and cooperation from the public in their ongoing efforts to combat crime and maintain peace in Rivers State.
