Chaos erupted in the Nyanya axis of Karu Local Government Council, Federal Capital Territory, and neighboring Mararaba town in Nasarawa State on Thursday morning due to protests against bad governance.
The protesters took to the streets and major roads, bringing business activities to a standstill. Despite the deployment of a heavy security presence, including the Nigerian military, police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilantes, the defiant protesters overwhelmed them.
Thousands of protesters, armed with dangerous weapons, stones, and placards with various inscriptions, challenged the security personnel positioned in strategic locations. They took control of the major Abuja/Keffi Expressway, heavily manned by security forces, effectively halting vehicular and pedestrian movement.
All banks in the area were locked with heavy padlocks, and market vendors and shop owners hurriedly closed their businesses to prevent looting.
Soldiers patrolled the areas, firing shots into the air to disperse the protesters, who remained undeterred.
As of the time of reporting, two individuals were fatally shot in Mararaba by stray bullets, although it is unclear whether the bullets were fired by soldiers or police officers.
