Referees to Explain VAR Decisions to Fans in Italian Cup

Rome, Italy – Fans watching the Italian Cup semi-finals and final will now receive direct explanations of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decisions, as Serie A introduces new audio technology to improve transparency in officiating.

New Communication System for VAR Decisions

Serie A announced on Monday, March 24, 2025, that referees will use audio communication to explain VAR-reviewed decisions to both fans in the stadium and viewers at home. This system will be tested in the two-legged semi-finals, which feature an exciting Milan derby, as well as the final in May.

The technology will be used only when referees conduct on-field reviews—checking their original decisions on a pitch-side screen after intervention from the VAR control room.

Introduction of “VARDict” for Stadium Updates

In addition to referee explanations, Serie A fixtures will implement a new system called “VARDict” starting this weekend. This feature will display VAR-related updates on big screens inside stadiums, notifying fans when a decision is under review or when a lengthy VAR check is in progress.

This move aligns with efforts in other leagues and international tournaments to make refereeing decisions more transparent, ensuring that supporters understand key calls that can influence match outcomes.

With the Italian Cup semi-finals approaching, fans can expect a clearer and more interactive match experience, enhancing engagement and reducing confusion over controversial decisions.
