The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill to establish a Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State. The decision followed the adoption of a report from the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND during a plenary session on Tuesday.
The report was presented by Senator Mohammed Muntari, the committee chairman, who noted that stakeholders at the public hearing supported the establishment of the university.
Senator Muntari emphasized that the new institution aims to provide scientific knowledge to address environmental hazards and offer professional training in technology. He stated, “The hallmark of the proposed Federal University of Applied Sciences is to produce graduates equipped with practical and theoretical knowledge in technology, applied science, commerce, and management. This initiative will help mitigate risks associated with productivity, data management, cost benefits, marketing, and security challenges facing society.”
Muntari further highlighted that the establishment of the university would alleviate some economic issues in Nigeria and reduce the likelihood of criminal activities. He expressed confidence that the skills and knowledge gained by graduates would significantly enhance their expertise in information management.
“The university will foster national integration and contribute to the social progress of Nigeria’s diverse youth who aspire to acquire skills in information, economics, and science management,” he added.
In addition to the Kaduna institution, the Senate also passed a bill to establish the Federal University of Technology in Ilaro, Ogun State, following the committee’s report adoption.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the lawmakers for their contributions toward the passage of these bills. He stated that if signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, these institutions would enhance the nation’s knowledge base, boost food production, and contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.
