Sylvester Oromoni: NDYC Wants Stricter Regulations to Guarantee Safety of Children
Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) have called for stricter government regulations of public and private schools to guarantee the safety of pupils/students alleging that the ugly incident that led to death of a student, Sylvester Oromono Jnr from Dowen College, Lagos could be happening in other schools as well.
The NDYC in a statement describing the incidence as barbaric and unfortunate said while the incidence has generated series of criticism and calls for the operating licence of the school, a deeper assessment of the situation was necessary.
Recall that a 12 year student of Dowen College, Lekki Lagos, Sylvester Oromono Jnr.
reportedly died from bullying and torture.
The statement signed by NDYC National Coordinator, Engr Jator Abido and Comrade Collins Ufuoma Achakpekri Director for International Relations pledged to partner with relevant security agencies to fishout school administrators that compromised safety of their pupils and students.
“We received with shock the incident that led to the death of 12 year student of Dowen College, Lekki Lagos, Sylvester Oromono Jnr. While we join other well meaning people to condenm the incidence and call for sanction of persons and institutions found culpable in the unfortunate act, we wish to appeal for a wholistic measure that will address the issue of children safety in schools.
“This singular situation should make the government reassess the laid down requirements for school operators. There are claims that many schools particularly private ones drug pupils of 3 years and below in order to have them under control as a result of limited personal in their employment.
“To this end, we as a council will take up the responsibility to monitor and expose such evil acts that put the health and life of the children at risk. We equally appeal to community leaders, religious leaders and every concerned citizen to join in the efforts to make schools safe for children”, the statement noted.
The NDYC further urged the government to ensure that justice in served by ensuring that anybody involved the evil act no matter how highly placed is made to face the law.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
