The Taraba State government has issued an urgent warning to residents in six local government areas (LGAs)—Karim-Lamido, Lau, Ardo-Kola, Gassol, Wukari, and Ibbi—about the risk of imminent flooding due to the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam into the Benue River.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has also predicted severe flooding across several states, including Taraba, Adamawa, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, and others. The release of water, which started on September 17, 2024, is being controlled but still poses significant flooding risks.
Zainab Jalingo, Taraba’s Commissioner for Information, has urged residents in high-risk communities along the Benue River valley to relocate immediately. Flooding in these areas has historically caused widespread devastation, including significant displacement and damage to homes, as seen in the floods of 2012 and 2022.
