The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) emphasized the crucial role of accessibility in firefighting, noting the cause of the recent fire at the old Karu Market remains unknown. Acting Director General, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, made this statement at the market scene, where a fire broke out yesterday evening.
A combined effort by the FCT Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, and Julius Berger Fire Service successfully contained the blaze. However, the fire started around 6:30 p.m., and despite prompt response, firefighters struggled to access the market, located behind a new market under construction.
Mrs. Wenegieme explained that the fire trucks and personnel were timely, but obstructed access delayed their efforts as they had to break through walls to reach the fire. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, but fortunately, no lives were lost, although goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.
The Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Civil Defence Corps were present to manage crowd control. Mrs. Wenegieme also praised the Department of Engineering Services for mobilizing the Julius Berger Fire Service to assist in the emergency.
