200 students converge in Lagos for National Schools’ Rackets Games
More than 200 students from 13 schools across the country have converged in Lagos for the maiden National Schools’ Rackets Games which opened on Monday at National Stadium, Surulere.
Our correspondent reports that the week long competition, which will end on Saturday, was organised by Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF).
NSSF President, Olabisi Joseph, said at the opening that the competition would focus on Badminton and Table Tennis.
“Not every child is interested in football; the fact that it is the most popular sport doesn’t mean we can’t build the interests of these children in other sports.
“Our focus is on Badminton and Table Tennis; when you play these games, it helps improve the mental alertness of the players; its important we groom them so we can replace aging athletes.
“By so doing, we take them off the streets, will build a better Nigeria,” she said.
Our correspondent reports that participants at the championships will compete in U-15 Badminton boys and girls singles, U-17 boys and girls singles, as well as doubles.
Other categories are Table Tennis are U-13 boys and girls singles and the U -15 boys and girls singles and doubles.
Our correspondent reports that 21 states registered for the championships, out of which 12 made it to the opening, while others are expected to join in the games.
Some of the participating states are Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi State, Bayelsa, Rivers, Kastina State, Kano State, Jigawa, Borno, Abuja and Lagos State.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
