The eagerly anticipated 2023-2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is now scheduled to kick off on September 30, following two previous postponements.
Initially, the new season was planned to commence on August 26, but it was rescheduled to September 9. The plan was to begin the season with a match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan. However, various factors, including the installation of AI cameras for game streaming and training on their usage, led to further delays.
The start of the 2023-2024 NPFL season was put on hold for nearly three weeks before the league’s governing body finally settled on September 30 as the new kickoff date.
While the games were initially planned to be streamed online via the newly launched NPFL Live, it remains uncertain whether the league will maintain the fixtures announced in August.
In a circular issued to all clubs and signed by the league’s Chief Operational Officer, Davidson Owumi, the NPFL board announced the season’s commencement and revealed an increase in the prize money from N100 million to N150 million. Additionally, each of the 20 league clubs will receive a take-off fund of N10 million.
The circular stated, “The 20 clubs will, as was done last season, receive a take-off grant of N10m each to smoothen your operations as the season starts. We are, therefore, expecting all the clubs to, as a matter of urgency, forward their respective account details to the NPFL secretariat for the transfer of the said amount as the season is set to commence on Saturday, September 30.”
