The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has allayed the fears of Nigerians over the reported jettisoning of the electronic transmission of election results for the manual mode in the 2023 General elections.
The election umpire clarified in a statement by its National Commissioner for Information and voter Education, Festus Okoye, that, the mode of transmission, collation and announcement of election results in the 2023 elections remains the same as adopted for recent elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
According to Okoye, the electronic transmission of election results has added to the credibility of the election process in Nigeria, and INEC does not have any cause to jettison same in the forthcoming elections.
He noted that, relying upon other means of communication for issues emanating from INEC, other than what is already uploaded on the commissions website or Portal, could be misleading.
Okoye said the clarification on the voting process and transmission of results became necessary following the misrepresentation of his views in a recent press interview, saying, the ambiguity in the press report was a total departure from what is obtained on INEC website.
While calling on Nigerians to avail themselves a copy of the Electoral Act, Okoye cautioned against misinterpreting what is already known to suit certain ulterior motives.
It may be recalled that, the media was has been awash with reports of the purported jettisoning of the electronic transmission of results in the 2023 elections, in preference for the manual mode
Meanwhile, spokesman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Daniel Bwala had lauded INECs clarification, as timely, just as a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Faskari, described it as a necessary step, that will calm frayed nerves.
The two were guests on Channel Television Political programme, SUNDAY PoLITICS.
