Benue In Short Supply Of Teachers
Benue State Teaching Service Board (TSB) Makurdi has said that it lost about 800 teachers to death, retirement and transfer of services to other places of work which is affecting teaching in Secondary Schools in the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Mr. James Pine who disclosed this in Makurdi said on noticing the problem on assumption of duty, some couple of months ago, he has made a request to the governor to permit for the recruitment of at least 500 new teachers in the first instance to cushion the effect.
The Executive Secretary said in the past three months he was able to bring down the monthly salary wage bill of secondary school teachers from about N800m to N600m following the blockage of linkages and pledged to re-invigorate the five directorates of the Board for optimal performance thereby raising the standard of education set by the board.
Mr. Pine who denied knowledge by governor Samuel Ortom to retrench some secondary school teachers in the state so as to save funds, attributed such speculations to the antics of the opposition who may have been out to discredit the APC administration; pointing out that as someone that is Labour friendly, governor Ortom will never think of such action and call on people with positive ways of doing things to offer it to government for consideration.
He pointed out that the Board under his leadership is taking a holistic approach in tackling cases of examination malpractices in schools because when children are not properly brought up, their tendency to get into social vices such as cultism, drug abuses and cheating are very high; saying children, parents and teachers should share the blame over the menace and implore the media to assist in it fight through highlighting the negative effects of malpractices in the publications.
On the dearth of sporting event by the Board, he assured that plans are at advance stage to organize more sporting event in the year so as to fish out hidden talents to feed Lobi Stars, national team and international clubs which Benue state is known for in the past.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
