The Gambia Seeks ECOWAS Cooperation for Judicial Reforms

The Republic of The Gambia is actively pursuing collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to implement significant judicial reforms. Mr. Dawda A. Jallow, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of The Gambia, held discussions on this matter during a meeting with Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, in Abuja, Nigeria, on January 30, 2024.
During the meeting, Minister Jallow, accompanied by a delegation of experts, engaged with President Touray, the President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Judge Edward Amoako Asante, and the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah. The discussions centered on The Gambia’s intentions to establish a court specifically dedicated to trying crimes committed during the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh, spanning the years 1994 to 2017.
Minister Jallow formalized The Gambia’s request for ECOWAS support in implementing the judicial reform recommendations put forth by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) of The Gambia.
In response, President Omar Alieu Touray affirmed ECOWAS’s commitment to supporting The Gambia and other member states in executing actions and programs that benefit citizens and contribute to the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law.
This collaborative effort between The Gambia and ECOWAS reflects a shared commitment to justice, accountability, and the promotion of democratic values within the West African region.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
