Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for signing the National Anthem bill into law on Wednesday morning. This bill, which was swiftly introduced and passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives last week, has faced widespread criticism for its expedited consideration during a time of pressing national issues such as rising inflation and security challenges.
Ezekwesili expressed her dismay on social media platform X, questioning the priorities of the National Assembly and President Tinubu given the current state of governance in Nigeria. She pointed out the disconnect between the urgency of passing a National Anthem bill and the numerous critical issues facing the nation.
“With all the horrible indicators of the state of governance? So, it is a new National Anthem that is their priority? I frankly thought it was a joke and gave it no attention,” Ezekwesili wrote. She further criticized the National Assembly and the executive for what she termed as “Majoring in the Minor.”
Ezekwesili urged Nigerians to recognize that the political class has failed to address the country’s real issues and called on citizens to take collective action to save the nation from what she described as overpaid, unethical, and incompetent leaders.
“The Citizens of this country must understand this absolute Truth by now that the Political Class is the biggest curse on this country,” she concluded, highlighting the need for citizens to become proactive in demanding better governance.
