Over 70 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have hailed the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for rewarding Olaniyi Olawale, the overall best-graduating Lagos State University (LASU) student, with N10million.
The CSOs have also described Sanwo-Olu’s educational policy as exceptional and masterstroke in the development of the education sector which resonates with current global trends.
The Convener of Campaign for Dignity in Governance & Coalition of 70 Civil Society Organizations, Razaq Olokoba commended the governor at a press conference Monday in Abuja.
Olokoba revealed that Sanwo-Olu’s monetary gift to LASU’s best-graduating student recently is refreshing and a massive encouragement to students who are growing in their disenchantment as academic excellence continues to decline over the years.
He noted that it was worrisome “that reality shows and non-educating programmes receive more reward by the society thereby relegating hard work in academics by brilliant students to the background.
“Special thanks to Governor Sanwo-Olu for the cash gift to the best graduating LASU student, we cannot thank him enough and his action will go a long way in changing the mindset of a lot of students who feel that participating in reality television programmes are better than academic excellence.
“We want other governors and rich Nigerians to emulate what Sanwo-Olu has done. The point is that we must support education and encourage young people to attain academic excellence – which we all know is the bedrock of every society, hence, Nigeria cannot be different,” Olokoba stated.
Speaking on the recent launch of X3M Tech, an initiative designed to equip the next generation of Nigerians with cutting-edge technological skills, the CSOs said the Lagos governor displayed a high sense of vision with the initiative.
Recall, the X3M Tech, an initiative for empowering young minds with the essential tools and knowledge required to thrive in the rapidly evolving digital landscape was established at the Muritala Ajadi Animashaun Community Senior Grammar School in Surulere, Lagos.
The coalition said the initiative is a milestone in the company’s commitment and dedication to empowering the youth of Lagos State. “This project holds a special place in our hearts, as it continues our long-standing tradition of educational interventions, which we have proudly undertaken in partnership with the Lagos State Government for over 12 years,” Olokoba remarked.
Sanwo-Olu, had visited the state University at the 27th Convocation rewarded Olawale for his feat of emerging as the best student.
In his remark, Sanw-Olu said, “And to our best-graduating student for the 2022/2023 session. Olaniyi Mubaraq Olawale of the Accounting Education Department, with a CGPA of 4.98 – First Class Honours! Congratulations to you, Olaniyi. This is a moment of great pride not just for you but for all of us. To celebrate and honour you, I am announcing a cash gift of N10 million for your outstanding feat. I believe that someone out there is working very hard to be the next Olaniyi Olawale, and I want to encourage you, wherever you might be now, to keep your eyes on that goal and make us all, as well as yourself, very proud”.
