President Tinubu Mourns Former Foreign Minister, Joy Ogwu

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Ambassador Joy Uche Angela Ogwu, Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, who died at the age of 79.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late diplomat as a trailblazer who embodied excellence, intellect, and dedication in service to her nation.
Ambassador Ogwu, a renowned scholar and stateswoman, served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from May 2008 to May 2017. During her tenure, she chaired the UN Security Council twice — in July 2010 and October 2011 — earning global respect for her leadership on peace, disarmament, and women’s empowerment.
Before her UN role, she was Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), where she made lasting contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy and the study of international relations.
President Tinubu lauded her distinguished service, noting that Ambassador Ogwu “rose to the highest level of her vocation through sheer excellence and hard work.”
He extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and members of the diplomatic and academic communities, praying for God’s comfort for all who mourn her and for the peaceful repose of her soul.
Investigations by Nigerian Concord Newspaper reveal that the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mr. Pius Akutah, has allegedly misappropriated public funds for a lavish lifestyle.
According to our findings, within months of assuming office, Akutah allegedly purchased a bulletproof SUV valued at approximately N850 million. In addition, he is reported to have acquired over twenty exotic SUVs for use as a convoy.
Akutah is also said to have acquired multiple high-value properties, including three in Abuja’s Maitama and Asokoro districts worth over N2 billion, and two in Lagos’ Banana Island valued at N1.8 billion. These acquisitions appear far beyond the scope of his official salary and allowances.
Further investigation suggests that Akutah may be using public funds to support political ambitions, including allegedly grooming militants across 23 local government areas in Benue State for a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid.
Staff of the Shippers Council reportedly claim that Akutah frequently accesses the council’s treasury without proper authorization. Some insiders have indicated that a petition will soon be filed with the EFCC, ICPC, and the Presidency to report his alleged misconduct.
