The Kaduna State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) has trained 140 community members to monitor Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects.
The Director-General of the agency, Mr Ahmed Munir, represented by the Secretary and Legal Adviser, Mr Lawal Ali, made this known at the opening of training in Kaduna on Tuesday.
Munir, explained that the community members would serves as “watch dogs” for RUWASSA.
He further explained that the participants, mostly youths would support the state in project monitoring.
According to him, the youths will monitor, supervise, and ensure that contractors deliver projects according to specifications to ensure value for money.
“The youths drawn from 22 out of the 23 local government areas of the state will monitor RUWASSA projects located in their various communities and report any anomalies in the execution of the projects.
“The objective of the training, therefore, is to equip the supervisors with the needed information for the project execution.
“They are to monitor and guide the contractors to ensure that they deliver quality projects that will serve the interest of the community members.”
The director-general warned the supervisors against conniving with the contractors to defraud the state government and the people, stressing that anyone caught would be prosecuted.
“Let us all be our brother’s keeper because the projects are for the benefit of all in our various communities,” he told the supervisors.
Our correspondent reports that the Kaduna State Government set aside N2.8bn in the 2021 budget for WASH interventions.
The statement also set aside N1.4 billion as for Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Hygiene and Sanitation (PEWASH) project.
