Sequence to the composition of Standing Committees by the 10th House of Representatives leadership, a group of six lawmakers have commended the Speaker, Hon Tajudeen Abbas for his kind gesture by reaching out to the opposition legislators in the House with some juicy committees.
Addressing the press at the weekend, the lawmakers under the umbrella of “Like-mind” explained that there was no favoritism, nepotism in the sharing of Standing committees by the Speaker even as they dismissed rumor of rancour within the lawmakers.
In the press conference, legislators numbering up to six in numbers were presence among which includes: the Deputy Chief of Staff to the speaker, Chamberlain Dunkwu who collectively dispelled rumour of any rift among lawmakers.
The spokesman of the group, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere while commending the speaker for his magnanimity toward opposition lawmakers in the composition of standing committees maintained that Hon Abbas considered the interest of other members above individual and parochial interest.
He disclosed that the speaker while selecting the Committees had exhibited a spirit of statesmanship inorder to satisfy various yearning political interest of different groups across party lines in the House.
According to him, Hon. Abbas has started living up to our expectations, so majority of members of the 10th Assembly are commending his leadership style emphasizing that the sharing formula for committees are signs of positive vibrations in the House.
Also, Rep. Miriam Onuhoa was made the chairman of Tetfund, Rep. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa was made the chairman of Petroleum Resources Upstream, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi was made the chairman of Committee on Navy, ” he said.
He added that their frontline supporters were equally considered for committee chairmanship, adding that the composition was a reflection of the unity that existed, and they have promised on focusing on delivering on people mandate.
” And that is why you can see the unity and oneness in the house, we are now sets for the full business of a parliament.
He said the speaker and the Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu considered the interests of members in decision making, adding that this was seen in the composition of principal officers and chairmanship of the standing committee.
He said the parliament was more united than ever, adding that the composition of the standing committee cut across different interests including those who contested the speakership with him.
According to him, there was no winner and no vanquished, adding that most of his challengers in the race were given relevant committees chairmanship positions.
“You can see, the main challenger, Rep Aliyu Betera was giving Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Committee, Rep. Sani Jaji was made chairman of Ecological fund.
