The head of Diocesan Hospital in Okpoko, Dr. Ejikeme Okonkwo, has sounded the alarm on potential health risks in a slum near Onitsha. Citing unsanitary conditions, he warns of a possible epidemic outbreak.
The concerns were raised during a free medical initiative led by former legislator Chukwuma Onyema, in alliance with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS and Niphemy Solutions Limited. Dr. Okonkwo points to the region’s dense population as a factor that could hasten the spread of illnesses.
With the prevalence of malaria and typhoid, attributed to standing water and unhygienic markets, the community’s health is at risk. A significant number of residents have reportedly not received formal medical care in years, often turning to local chemists or unqualified practitioners.
Dr. Okonkwo urges swift action from the state and federal governments, emphasizing the need for sanitation improvements, particularly by the Anambra State Government.
