APC NWC to Decide Final Candidates After Reviewing Appeals – Yilwatda
By: Fabian Apechihin
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, has said the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) will make the final decision on candidates that emerged from its recent primary elections after all appeals have been reviewed.
Speaking in response to concerns raised by aggrieved aspirants and party members, Yilwatda explained that complaints from those who felt unfairly treated during the primaries were expected to be submitted to the party’s Appeal Committee for consideration.
He noted that the window provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission for resolving disputes arising from party primaries closed on May 30, stressing that the APC would act in accordance with the law.
“We will forward all petitions to the legal department for proper review. If the complainants submitted within the approved timeline, their cases will be treated accordingly because we must remain law-abiding as a political party,” he said.
The APC chairman assured party members that their concerns would not be ignored, emphasizing the importance of grassroots support to the party’s success.
“This party exists to address the concerns of people at the grassroots. We need the people and their votes. No voice will be discarded, which is why I returned to engage with those raising these issues,” he stated.
Addressing concerns over delays in releasing the final list of successful candidates and demands by some aspirants for refunds, Yilwatda urged patience, explaining that the conduct of a primary election does not automatically determine the party’s final nominees.
“There is a process for handling all these matters. The legal department is currently reviewing the appeal reports. Conducting an election is not the final stage. Once all appeals have been considered, the National Working Committee will review both the election results and appeal outcomes before making a final decision,” he explained.
Meanwhile, a coalition of civil society organisations submitted a petition calling for the cancellation of the APC senatorial primary election in Niger South Senatorial District, citing allegations of irregularities and external interference.
The coalition, through a petition signed by its Deputy National Secretary, Danesi Momoh Prince, alleged that legitimate delegates were excluded and that the process was manipulated to produce a predetermined outcome.
According to the group, the protest was motivated by a commitment to electoral justice, internal party democracy, accountability, and good governance.
“We are deeply concerned by allegations of irregularities, lack of transparency, exclusion of legitimate delegates, political interference, manipulation of the process, and the alleged imposition of a preferred candidate against the wishes of party members,” the petition stated.
The coalition also accused Umaru Bago of attempting to influence the outcome of the primary election, insisting that the people of Niger South should be allowed to choose their representative without interference.
The group warned that failure to address the grievances of party members could negatively affect the APC’s electoral prospects, stressing that democracy can only thrive when political parties uphold fairness, participation, transparency, and accountability.
