The planned meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been rescheduled from Monday to August 28.
A senior member of ASUU’s National Executive Council confirmed the delay, stating, “Our meeting with the Federal Government will now take place on August 28.”
The postponement follows ASUU’s threat of a nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill the 2009 renegotiated agreement. The union’s demands include better welfare for university staff, increased funding for universities, and a halt to the expansion of universities across the country.
In response, Education Minister Tahir Mamman acknowledged that many of ASUU’s concerns date back to 1981 but assured that steps are being taken to address them. He mentioned that letters of invitation have been sent to ASUU leadership and other relevant organizations, and that efforts are underway to resolve the issues.
Mamman also emphasized that while some issues have already been addressed, such as the exit from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, the implementation has been delayed due to bureaucratic processes. He urged ASUU to approach the negotiations with an open mind to ensure a fair representation of all interests.
The Minister highlighted that the President’s campaign promise was to provide a lasting solution to these issues, and actions are being taken to honor that commitment.
