The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 54-year-old auto mechanic and an accomplice in connection with the alleged theft and sale of a Nissan Xterra SUV belonging to one of the mechanic’s customers.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the command, revealed this development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
According to Hundeyin, the incident was reported at Isheri Oshun Police Division on Sunday around 6:30 p.m. by the owner of the stolen vehicle. The owner informed the police that, while attending church at approximately 8:00 a.m. on the same day, the suspect visited his residence and obtained the car key from his daughter.
The suspect then drove the vehicle to an undisclosed location. Upon receiving the report, the surveillance and anti-car theft teams of the police station promptly responded to the scene.
“Through intelligence gathering, the said suspect was arrested and led the officers to the receiver of the car, simply identified as Charles, a 47-year-old. The receiver was also arrested, and the vehicle recovered, while investigation is ongoing,” Hundeyin stated.
He advised the public to exercise caution regarding non-family members with unrestricted access to their homes and families. Hundeyin also urged family members to verify requests from outsiders with other family members, even if the person making the request is a regular visitor.
Furthermore, the spokesperson cautioned prospective car buyers to verify with the police before making payments, as the vehicle might have been reported stolen.
