A barber, Abibu Shogbesan, was on Wednesday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly belonging to an unlawful group known as “Eiye”.
Shogbesan, 20, residing at Baruwa in the Alimosho area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and belonging to an unlawful society.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences at 12 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2019 at No. 23, Isha-Lawal Str., Baruwa.
Olaluwoye said that a member of the community reported to police that a group of boys suspected to be members of Eiye cult were disturbing the community and committing crimes in the area.
She said that the anti-cultism unit of the police found out that the cult group was having a meeting near Ayobo Roundabout and raided the area.
Olaluwoye told the court that the defendant was the only person arrested as all other accomplices escaped arrest during the raid.
The offences contravene Sections 411 and 42 (a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Our correspondent reports that Section 42 (a) stipulates a three-year jail term for offences relating to unlawful society, while 411 carries two years for conspiracy.
The defendant was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The Chief Magistrate, Oluwatoyin Oghere, said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until April 28 for mention.
