Ferran Torres’s goal secured a narrow 1-0 victory for Barcelona against Porto on Wednesday. This hard-fought win marked Coach Xavi Hernandez’s 100th game in charge and significantly improves Barcelona’s prospects in Group H, following their early exits in the past two editions of the competition.

The match had its tense moments, with Barcelona midfielder Gavi receiving a second yellow card and being sent off in stoppage time. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Barcelona held on desperately to secure the victory.

Xavi made an interesting choice by selecting 16-year-old Lamine Yamal to start on the right wing, making him the youngest starter in Champions League history at 16 years and 83 days. While Yamal showed promise in the first half, Porto largely dominated the game, taking advantage of a Barcelona midfield missing the injured Pedri and Frenkie de Jong.

Oriol Romeu, who was brought in to replace Sergio Busquets in the holding midfield role, had a tough night as Porto constantly pressured him. The Porto fans, energized by a packed stadium, cheered on their team as they sought to disrupt Barcelona’s play.

Early in the match, Mehdi Taremi appealed for a penalty after Jules Kounde appeared to tug his shirt in the box, but the decision would have been considered soft.

On the attacking front, Joao Felix played a crucial role for Barcelona, much to the dismay of Porto fans who remembered his past with Benfica.

Porto’s midfielder, Romario Baro, made a costly mistake just before halftime when he lost possession, allowing Ilkay Gundogan to set up Ferran Torres for the decisive goal. Torres, who had replaced the injured Robert Lewandowski earlier in the match, calmly slotted home a low shot.

Barcelona faced increased pressure in the second half, with Kounde and Joao Felix both receiving bookings as they defended resolutely to thwart Porto’s attacks. Jules Kounde made a remarkable tackle from behind to dispossess Pepe, who was on the verge of shooting at Barcelona’s goal.

Despite Porto’s efforts, they couldn’t find an equalizer. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona’s goalkeeper, made several crucial saves, including one with his feet against Galeno at the near post and a remarkable diving save to deny Galeno’s powerful effort.

In a late drama, the referee initially awarded Porto a penalty for a handball by Joao Cancelo, but after a VAR review, the decision was reversed due to an earlier handball by Stephen Eustaquio. ⚽️🔥 #Barcelona #Porto #ChampionsLeague #FootballDrama

Transfer: Gabriel Jesus Could Leave Arsenal as Napoli Show Interest

Published

on

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus could leave the club this summer, with Italian side Napoli reportedly interested in signing the Brazilian forward.

According to Sky Italia, Napoli’s new manager, Massimiliano Allegri, is a long-term admirer of Jesus and is keen to explore the possibility of bringing him to Serie A.

Jesus and Allegri share the same agent, Giovanni Branchini, who was reportedly spotted at Napoli’s pre-season training camp in Castel di Sangro on Friday.

A meeting could reportedly take place to discuss a potential move for the Arsenal forward.

Napoli’s interest could depend on their ability to offload one of their existing strikers. The club would reportedly need to find new destinations for Lorenzo Lucca, who spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, or Romelu Lukaku before making a move for Jesus.

Arsenal are reportedly willing to consider offers of around £18 million for the 29-year-old, who has entered the final year of his contract with the Gunners.

Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 and could now be heading for a new challenge in Italy if Napoli’s interest develops into a formal transfer.

LaLiga: Mourinho Introduces Four New Rules at Real Madrid

Published

on

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly introduced a series of new rules at the club after identifying what he considered bad habits within the dressing room.

Mourinho returned to the Spanish giants for a second spell this summer and has already begun implementing changes to improve discipline and professionalism within the squad, according to AS.

One of the new measures concerns players’ diets. The Portuguese manager has reportedly ended the freedom for players to eat whatever they choose, with the club’s nutritionist now responsible for overseeing their meals.

Under the new system, menus will be carefully structured and determined according to the nutritional needs of the players.

Mourinho has also introduced a disciplinary measure for players who arrive late to training. Such players will reportedly be required to undergo individual gym sessions.

Another rule concerns injury rehabilitation. Players recovering from injuries will now be expected to complete their rehabilitation at the club’s training ground under the supervision of Real Madrid’s medical and fitness staff rather than working independently with external personnel.

The changes are part of Mourinho’s reported efforts to establish greater discipline and control within the Real Madrid squad following his return to the club.
