With Bayer Leverkusen potentially on the cusp of clinching their first-ever Bundesliga title next week, depending on Bayern Munich’s results, Alonso remained cautious. “In football, anything can happen,” he told reporters, emphasizing that “it’s still too early.”
“We are in a very favorable position. However, we’re not fixating on the title; our focus is on the next opponent,” Alonso added.
Leverkusen is set to face Union Berlin away on Saturday, simultaneous with Bayern’s match against mid-table Heidenheim.
Alonso’s squad is on the brink of an extraordinary season, having secured a spot in the German Cup final with a resounding 4-0 victory over Fortuna Duesseldorf on Wednesday, extending their unbeaten streak to 40 games this season.
Despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, Alonso affirmed his commitment to Leverkusen for the next season. He noted that both players and fans were staying grounded, wary of past experiences when Leverkusen narrowly missed out on multiple titles in 2002.
“The fans are perceptive and recall the past. They’re patient. We’ll celebrate when the time is right. For now, it’s about staying focused and preparing,” Alonso remarked.
Regarding striker Victor Boniface, who made his return from injury against Duesseldorf, Alonso stated that while he could start, the decision was made to ease him back gradually. “It was beneficial for him to get some minutes on Wednesday. We want to ensure his return is managed properly and he feels comfortable. His contribution is crucial to us.”
