Birthday Tribute: Hamza Gambo: X-raying The Metamorphosis of A Journalist Turn an officer and a gentleman.
I seldom write birthday tributes to my friends, and colleagues, but for this man to retire successfully against initial fears that he was going nowhere, and to attain the age of 65, I feel compelled to pen this, to a teacher, a journalist, and an accomplished Military officer. A man of many paths who trekked many paths with dignity and honour. Hamza Gambo:
In X-Raying the Metamorphosis of this journalist turned officer and a gentleman, I wish you happy 65th birthday anniversary.
As budding journalists in Maiduguri during the military regency, most of us had the penchant for sensational headlines.
We were always on the lookout for negative developments so we could grab the day’s lead.
Fellow journalists who were working in Government owned media houses did not enjoy that leverage, as their reports were often censored, especially when they touch on the government and its officials.
One person always went out with us to hunt for the news even when he knew his report may eventually be censored.
That had been Hamza Gambo who had then transferred his services from a school he was teaching English in Bama, to the Borno Radio Televission Corporation, BRTV.
Even as an editor and later head of the reportorial team and acting controller news, Hamza would take the risk of going with us to scout for news, including ones with negative angles.
We used to wonder what a young man with such radical dispositions was doing in government media establishment.
Of course, his reports were often seizelessly censored, but he was never deterred, so long as such a report was factual. Not even when they affect the government. But very often too, all his social interest stories were the headlines on BRTV news.
That was how our paths first crossed. Hamza left the impression upon me as a principled and refined professional, with reformist ideas about news reportage, even when there are risks involved.
The day he met me at the NUJ Press Center in Maiduguri and told me that he was enlisting in the Army, as a commission officer, my first fears for him was how the Army could accommodate a virtual rebel, in that regimental setting.
Surprisingly to me and to many other colleagues who knew Hamza Gambo, he successfully joined the Nigerian army and rose through the ranks from a lieutenant to subsequently become a Brigadier General before he retired.
Hamza Gambo’s resumė of service while in the Nigerian Army is in itself a testimony, loaded with surprises to many.
Of course, the initial fears of Hamza, the journalist fitting into the military, had since been dispelled.
The attendant change of attitudee and maturity that dogged his gradual rise in the Army shall be the story for another day.
But of particular interest to me was how Hamza Gambo, so easily adjusted to life from being a teacher, through his sojourn as a journalist, only to end up as a successful Military officer, without any blemish.
One could say, that, the misadventures of this firebrand journslist, was perhaps tampered by some form of youthful exuberance, while his outing as an officer was the direct outcome of the turn around reorientation he may have received.
I must confess that, during his years as an officer of the Nigerian Army, our friendship had never suffered any break. I must also place on record that the immense experiences of this gentleman officer have rubbed off on me in many ways.
I dare say we have many things in common.

Bwala also extended condolences to Suleiman’s family, associates and the Nigerian media industry, describing his passing as a monumental loss at a time his experience, courage and service to the nation were still greatly needed.
Suleiman reportedly died shortly before a scheduled surgery.
A pioneer editor of National Trail Newspaper, Abdulazeez Suleiman was regarded as a thoroughbred journalist with a remarkable talent for breaking exclusive stories and shaping public discourse through responsible journalism.
Throughout his distinguished career, he worked with notable media organisations, including National Trail Newspaper, Daily Trust, Summit and The Road. He earned widespread admiration for fearless reporting, ethical conduct and unwavering commitment to professionalism.
His writings and public interventions consistently reflected deep concern for justice, peace, accountability and national unity.
Beyond journalism, Suleiman was widely respected as a bridge-builder who strongly believed in dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse peoples. He remained steadfast in his conviction that truth and justice are essential pillars for national progress.
Though his voice has now gone silent, the values and ideals he stood for will continue to inspire generations. His legacy as a principled journalist, advocate and patriot will endure in the hearts of many whose lives he touched through his work and humanity.
The management and staff of National Trail Newspaper prayed Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and comfort his family, friends, colleagues and members of the in this moment of grief.
Rest in peace, Abdulazeez Suleiman. Your service and legacy will not be forgotten.
