Bloomberg Challenges Forbes: Dangote Rated Africa’s Richest Man, Elon Musk Maintains World’s Top Position

Aliko Dangote Retains Title as Africa’s Richest Man, Bloomberg Billionaires Index Confirms

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index (BBI), Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, has been reaffirmed as the richest man in Africa, despite the fluctuations in the Nigerian currency against the US dollar.

In the recent daily release of the top billionaire lists by Bloomberg on Tuesday, it was revealed that Dangote’s wealth of $15.6 billion placed him at the top among other African billionaires in the Index.

Among the top 500 world billionaires for the year 2023, five other Africans were listed, including Johann Rupert and family from South Africa, with a net worth of $13.3 billion. Nicky Oppenheimer of South Africa, Nassef Sawiris of Egypt, Natie Kirsh of South Africa, and Naguib Sawiris were also featured on the list, with net worths of $9.0 billion, $7.47 billion, $7.37 billion, and $5.93 billion, respectively.

In the global ranking, Elon Musk and Bernard Arnault secured the top two spots as the world’s richest individuals, with wealth amounts of $219 billion and $194 billion, respectively. Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates followed closely with $151 billion and $130 billion, while Larry Ellison claimed the fifth position with $130 billion on the billionaires’ chart.

It is worth noting that Forbes Magazine had previously announced on June 16th that Johann Rupert had overtaken Dangote as Africa’s richest man, ending Dangote’s ten-year consecutive reign. Forbes’ real-time Global Billionaires Ranking indicated Rupert’s net worth as $12 billion, while Dangote’s was stated as $10.8 billion.

Dangote’s Net Worth Plunges Amid Naira Depreciation and CBN’s Forex Policy

Aliko Dangote experienced a significant decline in his net worth, attributed to the depreciation of the Nigerian Naira, which was caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to auction the dollar at a rate lower than the official market price.
