Butcher bags 1 year imprisonment for stealing railroad steel

A Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, on Thursday sentenced a butcher, Mordecai Jonathan, to one year imprisonment for stealing railroad steel.

Magistrate Mary Adams, however, gave the convict an option to pay N20, 000 fine.

Jonathan was charged by the police with theft, contrary to section 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Isah Hassan, told the court that the defendant was arrested by a team of police men attached to the railway station, Kafanchan on July 24.

Hassan said the defendant was caught by policemen with stolen railroad steel, worth N25, 000, in his bag.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The prosecutor prayed the court to try him summarily in line with Section 125 (8) of the Criminal Justice Law of Kaduna State.
