A civil society organization, the Enugu Good Governance Group (E-3G), has called for the resignation of the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, and the Director of Corps Certification, Mohamad Ibrahim, over what it describes as the misrepresentation of facts that led to a certificate controversy involving Governor Peter Mbah.
The group has also expressed concern over the rising judgment debts incurred due to the alleged recklessness and ineptitude of government officials. It called for the heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to be held responsible for such penalties, and for the burden of judgment fees to be placed on MDAs and senior officials in cases of infractions.
The call for the resignation of NYSC officials comes after a court judgment in which Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State was absolved of certificate forgery allegations against the NYSC, and the agency was ordered to pay N5 million in damages to the governor. The court found that the NYSC had admitted reinstating Mbah and acknowledged his service clearance letters, raising questions about the handling of the case.
The E-3G group asserts that the victory in Governor Mbah’s case is not just about him but about the injustices suffered by many individuals due to the alleged ineptitude, collusion, conspiracy, politicization, recklessness, and impunity of public institutions. The group calls for legal reforms to hold MDAs and officials accountable for judgment fees in order to serve as a deterrent.
