The location of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who recently returned to Nigeria after a three-month medical trip to Germany, has sparked controversy. Instead of resuming his duties in the Ondo State capital, Akure, he has been ruling from his private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. Akeredolu’s stay in Ibadan has raised concerns among residents, political activists, critics, and opposition parties.
Akeredolu has already made significant decisions, such as assenting to the bill establishing Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and sacking the media aides of his deputy, while operating from Ibadan. This situation has led many to question why the governor has chosen to administer the affairs of Ondo State from another state.
Supporters argue that Akeredolu’s absence did not hinder him from performing his official duties and functions, and there was no vacuum in governance even when he was abroad for medical treatment. However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns about the governor’s continued absence from Ondo State since his return, suggesting that he may not yet be fit to handle the stress of office.
The controversy highlights the ongoing debate over the location of elected officials’ governance activities, especially in an era where remote work and digital communication have become more prevalent.
