As part of efforts to cushion the effects on COVID-19 lockdown on its customers, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has suspended rotational load management schedule for power supply.
The company said it has therefore increased significantly, power availability to several customers in some locations.
In the new electricity supply chain, some of the customers have their power boosted from a mere six hours to a comfortable 18 to 24 hours daily.
Spokesman for BEDC, Mr. Adekunle Tayo, in a statement said the disco has also commenced the process of boosting the present grid power with additional power supply source through embedded generation.
Tayo stated that the move “is a demonstration of company’s sensitivity to residents of its franchise states of Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti States who are on lockdown over the Coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic” and assured of safety of its workers.
He said: “the increase in power supply will be inforce for now till the COVID 19 pandemic lockdown ebbs away”, adding that however the increase could only be affected by technical faults or other untoward circumstances in the power value chain.
According to him, “the increase in power supply to some areas was made possible due to the shutdown of commercial and industrial activities with the limited power normally utilized by these class of customers now redirected for residential use.
“The national grid remains the major constraint to BEDC increase in power supply as it is what we get from the grid that we distribute to all sectors in our network,” he added.
