The Kwara state Police Command is making a wave in its efforts to rid the state of crimes and criminality.

Addressing journalists on Friday in Ilorin, the state capital, the Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado, gleefully announced the arrest of six suspected kidnappers, while their victim, Usman Muhammadu, was rescued unhurt.

He said: “The said Usman Muhammadu was kidnapped by gunmen and the family had paid the ransom of N500, 000 for the release of the victim. Immediately the information was received, detectives attached to Ekutu Division swung into action and concerted efforts of the police and members of Vigilante Group led to the arrest of six suspects. During police interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime and total sum of N361, 150 being part of ransom collected for the release of the victim was recovered. ”

The CP further disclosed that two single barrel guns, seven cell phones, including that of the victim, as well as dangerous charms were recovered from the suspects, adding that the case is still under investigation, while they would have their day in court upon completion of investigation.

The Command also successfully tackled three different armed robbery cases, making five arrests. Of particular interest was the arrest of one Tajudeen Ayinde, who the police boss described as a “notorious criminal, who specialises in robbing traders in Ilorin and its environs with dangerous weapons of their valuables and cash.”

He said: “The Suspect met his nemesis when he entered into the shop of one Mrs. Jiy Oluwafemi of Railway line area, Ilorin.

“The presence of SARS operatives on patrol of the area led to the arrest of the suspect and the sum of N78, 000 was recovered from him. The suspect confessed to the crime. ”

Items recovered from the five armed robbery suspects, according to Lawan Ado, included iron rod, Honda CVR Jeep with Ref. No. Lagos AAA-362-AG, two techno phones, one itel phone and cash sum of N38.985, adding that efforts are ongoing to arrest the gang members in possession of their firearms.

While eight people suspected to be members of secret cult were also nabbed, with one single barrel locally made gun, one double barrel locally mase gun and five cartridges, Lawan Ado said one Kolawole Olatunji was arrested for allegedly vandalizing an electricity transformer on Afon road in Ilorin. The CP said upon the arrest of the suspect, vandalised parts of the transformer were recovered from him, adding that efforts to arrest his accomplices are on, while the suspect would soon be charged to court.
