Dead Persons Receive Salaries In Kaduna – Investigation

By Lola SERIKI- IDAHOSA, Kaduna An investigation into the staff payroll of Chikun local government area in Kaduna State has indicated that the dead were still featured into the payroll system of the local government years after their demise. Checks by our Correspondent also revealed that hundreds of workers who had either retired
from service or got transferred to other local governments several years ago were still featuring in the same Chikun local government payroll. The situation according to our findings has forced the local government to owe its workers salaries because of the number of work force in its system. Confirming the incidence in a chat with Journalists in her office, the Interim Chairperson of the local government, Hajiya
Hadiza Ladi Yahuza, said the local government is working hard to remove ghost workers from its payroll. According to her, “on the payroll we have got some interesting issues. Some staff that have died were still featuring in our payroll, even some staff that are retired were still featuring, some staff that have left long ago to other local governments were still featuring on the payroll. And we got about 60 of the workers not verified by
us still featuring on the payroll. So we hope that by next month we will have a clean payroll in the local government.” She said the most challenging issue before local government Chairmen in the State is the payment of workers’ salaries because of the ghost workers syndrome. The Chairperson said “we are doing all we can to make sure that we have a clean pay roll in the system to be able to pay the staff what is due to them.”
